Ceilings can be an ongoing expense taking a chunk out of your budget. Before you purchase another ceiling, ceiling tile, grid, ac vent or return do yourself and your budget a huge favor and take a few minutes to read this page.1. Water spots or sagging tiles are things you don't want to have to deal with for a few reasons. Of course the apparent reason is what it says about your business, what your customer thinks when he/she looks up. You don't want to give anyone a reason not to come back and dirty appearance can do that. But also the mold issue is huge and when you see water spots or sagging tiles that means they have gotten wet and there is an extremely good chance they are growing mold in them. 2. Mold, Mildew, Bacteria are three ways to drive business away. As high as 40% of the public is affected by mold, even if it cant be seen. If you are a business that deals with the health department, FDA or USDA and they find mold in your ceiling, they at best will fine you. On average, depending on how bad the mold issue is, they will close you down until you have repaired the problem. Mildew along with mold has a nasty odor. Most of the porous tiles (acoustical) have holes in them, bacteria goes up in these holes and can grow, causing another problem for your clientele as well as your staff.3. Impact Damage, Most acoustical tiles are easy to damage and cannot be cleaned. When someone goes above them to work, such as an electrician, air conditioning repair, plumber, etc they have a tendency at best to nick a corner of a tile and now you have a tile to replace. Since acoustical tiles are mostly fiber board (wood /mineral) they are replaced quite often. 4. Acoustical ceiling tiles make up more than 80% of the tiles out there. Acoustical tiles for the most part are the tiles you see that have holes in them and are hard to match at times for those who only need to replace a few tiles. Some say you can paint the tiles and depending on the business and type of paint used that may be true. But I would check with your insurance company first to see if it could invalidate your insurance. Besides the time and effort of painting it only masks the water spots at best and does nothing to help with the mold issue and can negate the acoustic value of the tile since it is the holes that give you that value and you are now filling them with paint.5. Metal Grid, Moisture will cause metal grid to rust and metal grid is hard to sand and paint. In some areas such as food prep areas, commercial kitchens, food processing plants the issue of painting grid or tile is not allowed. 6. Metal AC Vents and Air Returns rust, chip and are hard to keep clean. Moisture from condensation in the ducts come out the vents and cause them to rust even faster. To sand these down, paint and make look good again is hard and very time consuming.7. Consider the ceilings future when you purchase. What will be my return on investment? How much do you want to spend on tiles, grid, vents, returns, labor, time involved either after hours or cost to shut down to do this. Not to mention will you be able to match the tiles if you need to replace them. 8. Sheet rock with vinyl coating, Can grow mold, water stain, is washable but the vinyl coating can peel and they are heavy.9. Tin or Metal, Hard to cut, easy to cut yourself, will rust, corrode, can chip and cost 3-5 times Genesis. 10. FRP costs much more than Genesis and are harder to install.11. Insulated Ceiling Tiles for the most part insulated ceiling tiles have a low r factor to them, but what is worse and makes an insulated ceiling tile worthless is the fact that the grid is not insulated so you have a one inch gap around all of your insulated tiles that has no insulation. 12. Spectratile is another PVC tile, but adds lead so it is not a class A (1) or Class B (2) or even Class C (3) they fail as far as the smoke part of the ASTM E 84 as such is not Fire Rated and should only be used out doors.13. All other PVC tile is very thin , higher priced and made mostly for glue up or nail up, if you use them in a drop ceiling system most need support and can cost as much as 5 times Genesis. 14. Standard sizes are 2’ x 2’, 2’ x 4’ and then 4’ x 8’ all other are tiles either cut down or special made. They could be older tiles no longer made and if they are 99% of the time matching is near impossible.15. Cleaning: FRP and PVC extremely easy. Metal or Tin clean easy but watch out for water since they rust. Vinyl coated cleans easy but after a while the vinyl coating peels. Acoustical is nearly impossible, most say use a vacuum or brush either way that only takes care of loose dirt and dust at best. It is extremely time consuming prepping the area first or removing and taking some where already prepped for the cleaning. Then the cleaning is time consuming. SOLUTION: Genesis Ceilings actually love water, you can wash them millions of times and they look the same as the day you put them in.
